Intensives

If you have been interested in therapy but have struggled to fit it into your schedule or are intimidated by the potential length of treatment, therapy intensives may be a good option for you. Therapy intensives are extended sessions which allow clients to reach their goals more quickly.

We recommend intensive sessions particularly for clients seeking eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. EMDR is primarily used to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but research has shown that it is also effective for treating other mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, and even OCD. Since EMDR intensives provide uninterrupted treatment, they are often more efficient than weekly one-hour sessions.

Is an Intensive right for me?

We recommend intensive therapy for clients who are looking to process their past trauma and work through their symptoms, but may not feel they want to be in therapy long-term. While the cost is more up front for intensive therapy, it can sometimes save money in the long term due to being more efficient.

For clients who have extensive trauma histories, EMDR intensives can give you more time to process your trauma and recover from the EMDR experience, which can be mentally exhausting. In a traditional 50 minute therapy session, we are left with only about 30 minutes of EMDR processing, which can mean opening a wound and having to leave session without it being fully closed yet. In an EMDR intensive, however, you are given the time to fully work through that difficult memory and leave knowing that it is fully reprocessed.

EMDR intensives can also be beneficial for clients with multiple traumatic memories, or complex PTSD. In a 3-6 hour time span, we may be able to process more than one memory in a session. While this can be effective with getting you towards closing in therapy, also keep in mind that this can be an exhausting process. If you are interested in doing multiple memories in one session, speak with your therapist about this in your intake session.

What can I expect from an intensive?

First, you will book an intake session with one of our therapists and establish a therapeutic relationship with your therapist and identify your goals. You will likely have at least 2-3 more sessions wherein you work on feeling comfortable with your therapist and establishing treatment goals, before starting intensive sessions.

Intensive sessions can be booked as either a 3 or 6 hour block. We will offer breaks during these blocks, which you can work out with your therapist before starting.

How much do EMDR intensives cost?

The initial intake session is an hour and a half and is $200

Any subsequent 1 hour sessions are $130

A three hour intensive is $600

A six hour intensive is $1200

Insurance does not cover intensives, but your insurance may cover your intake session and some 1 hour sessions.
